Digitalisation of SMEs in Bulgaria: How European Tools and EDIH-NWACB Support Transformation

In today’s economy, digitalisation is no longer an option but a necessity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It improves operational efficiency, enhances competitiveness, and supports sustainable development in the context of rapid technological change.

An increasing number of Bulgarian SMEs are seeking tools and services that help them analyse their current situation, plan their development and introduce digital solutions in a structured way. In this respect, the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) play an important role by providing hands-on support for digital transformation.

What is the Digital Maturity Assessment Tool (DMAT)?

One of the key European instruments for SMEs is the Digital Maturity Assessment Tool (DMAT). It is a free online tool that enables companies to gain a clear overview of their level of digital maturity.

Through DMAT, enterprises can:

  • check their current digital status;
  • identify strengths and weaknesses in their digital processes;
  • receive concrete recommendations for next steps;
  • review priority areas for the adoption of artificial intelligence, data, automation and other technologies.

The official tool is available at: https://european-digital-innovation-hubs.ec.europa.eu/open-dma

The Role of EDIH-NWACB

EDIH-NWACB (European Digital Innovation Hub – Northwest Automotive Cluster Bulgaria) is part of the European network of digital innovation hubs. In its activities, the hub supports SMEs, with a focus on the manufacturing and automotive sectors, in adopting digital technologies and Industry 4.0 solutions.

Its core services include:

  • Test before invest – opportunities to test digital solutions and AI use cases in real environments;
  • Training and skills development, aimed at the practical application of new technologies;
  • Support to access finance through European and national programmes;
  • Connecting to the innovation ecosystem – linking businesses, research organisations, technology providers and public authorities.

How DMAT and EDIH-NWACB Complement Each Other

The Digital Maturity Assessment Tool provides a starting point – showing where the enterprise currently stands and which areas require priority development. EDIH-NWACB builds on this assessment through practical services, expert support and guidance towards concrete solutions.

This allows SMEs to move from self-assessment to real actions and to establish a sustainable digital transformation process tailored to their needs and capacity.

Digitalisation as a Competitive Advantage

Digitalisation is no longer just a technological upgrade — it is a competitive advantage, a driver of growth and long-term resilience. European initiatives such as DMA and the network of EDIHs, including EDIH-NWACB, provide Bulgarian SMEs with the tools, knowledge and support needed to overcome technological barriers and thrive in an increasingly digital economy.

Now is the time to assess your potential, use the available resources and prepare for the future!
